FAQs

Is composite bonding painful?

No - composite bonding is a quick, pain-free treatment that usually requires no anaesthetic and no drilling.

Unlike crowns or veneers, which require the removal of some tooth enamel, bonding involves adding material to the surface of your tooth. Because we aren't touching the sensitive inner parts of the tooth, there is rarely any need for a numbing injection.

How long does composite bonding last?

With good oral hygiene and mindful habits, composite bonding typically lasts between 5 and 7 years.

While the bond is strong, the material can wear down or pick up stains over time. The good news? Bonding is "additive," meaning when it does start to show its age, we can usually just add a fresh layer or polish it back to its original glory.

Can the bonds stain?

Yes - composite resin can pick up stains from food, drink, and lifestyle habits. To keep your smile bright, it’s best to minimise contact with staining agents.

The first 48 hours after your treatment are the most critical. During this window, the resin is still "settling," making it particularly vulnerable to picking up colors from what you eat and drink.

Can bonding be removed?

Yes—composite bonding is considered a reversible treatment because it is added to the surface of your tooth without significantly changing the structure underneath.

If you ever decide you want to return to your natural look, or if you choose to upgrade to more permanent porcelain veneers in the future, the resin can be safely removed by a dentist.

Does it damage my natural teeth?

No—composite bonding is a "minimally invasive" procedure, meaning we don't need to remove or "shave down" your healthy tooth enamel to achieve a beautiful result.

In most cases, your natural tooth remains completely intact underneath the bonding. This makes it a much safer and more conservative alternative to traditional veneers or crowns.

Can I whiten bonded teeth?

No, teeth whitening treatments only affect natural tooth enamel. They will not change the color of composite bonding, crowns, or veneers.

If you whiten your teeth after having bonding applied, your natural teeth will get brighter, but the bonded areas will stay the same color. This can result in an uneven, patchy-looking smile.

How many teeth can I bond?

You can bond as many teeth as you need. Most patients choose to bond 1 to 4 teeth for minor corrections, but some opt for a "composite veneer" look across 6 to 8 teeth for a full smile makeover.

The number of teeth usually depends on your specific goals and your budget. Because it is done by hand, "sculpting" each tooth takes time and precision.

Is composite bonding cheaper than veneers?

Yes - composite bonding is generally much more affordable than porcelain veneers, often costing about a third of the price per tooth.

The price difference isn't just about the material; it’s about the process. While veneers are high-end "custom-built" restorations made in a lab, bonding is an "artistic" restoration crafted by your dentist right there in the chair.
