Book TreatmentPeriodontitis (gum disease) is inflammation of the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth, most commonly caused by a build-up of plaque. It manifests as swollen, red, sore, and bleeding gums, and can lead to shrinking gums and even tooth loss. Gum disease should be treated immediately to reduce its side effects and mitigate the risks it presents.

For advanced gum disease, we have a specialist periodontist who carries out treatments to stabilise the gums. Treatment with Mario involves ‘root planning’, using a fine scaler tip to remove the bacteria found deep in the gum and along with the roots of the teeth. Mario also offers soft tissue surgery.
Gum disease can lead to bad breath, a bad taste in the mouth, shrinking gums, and even tooth loss. It is no surprise our clients want to get on top of it as soon as symptoms are detected.
The first port of call for treating gum disease is a visit to the dentist or hygienist for a hygiene appointment, and improved oral health routines (blushing and flossing). If these interventions don’t deliver the desired results, we work alongside Periodontal Specialist Dr Mario Veltri, who has helped many of our patients restore their gum health through vigorous in-clinic cleaning. Mario is very thorough and offers excellent service to all his patients.

Answer
Gum disease is common among smokers, the elderly, and people with poor oral hygiene, but if you don’t tick any of those boxes and have been told you have it by a medical professional, it could be down to genetics. Some people simply tend towards gum disease despite a good oral health regime.
Answer
If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and other health complications. Gum disease has been linked to heart problems, diabetes, and strokes.
Answer
At Stella Dental, you will be given a local anaesthetic to make the cleaning process as comfortable as possible. Your gums might feel sore after treatment for 24 – 48 hours, but this can be managed with ordinary, over-the-counter painkillers.
Answer
Treatment is more thorough and takes longer than a typical visit to the hygienist, lasting approximately 90 minutes.
